Leicestershire Removals

House removals

House removals across the county

Leicestershire holds six fairly different kinds of house, and the difference between them is the difference between a straightforward day and a long one. The survey exists to establish which one you are moving out of.

City terraces

Leicester, Clarendon Park, Aylestone and Highfields. Narrow halls, a turn at the top of the stairs, and parking that decides where the day starts. Often a first-floor window is the sensible route for a bed frame, which is a survey finding rather than a moving-day surprise.

Suburban semis

Oadby, Wigston, Birstall, Glenfield and the postwar estates. Drives, straight kerbs and halls wide enough to turn a sofa. The most straightforward stock in the county and the bulk of what we move.

Market-town houses

Market Harborough, Melton, Ashby and Hinckley. Georgian and Victorian frontages, restricted town centres, and in two of those towns a market day that closes streets — worth checking before a date is fixed.

Stone and village

The Wolds, the Vale of Belvoir and the Charnwood villages. Thick walls, small openings, uneven floors and lanes that decide the vehicle. Slower, entirely ordinary, and quoted honestly.

New builds

Around Hinckley, Lutterworth, Coalville and the city edge. Sensible doorways and decent parking, with plasterboard and stair spindles that mark if a carton brushes them — so protection goes down exactly as it does in an old house.

Student houses

Shared terraces across the city and Loughborough, where a "house move" is frequently one room rather than a household. Read the student page instead if that is your situation.

What the survey settles

  • The honest volume, loft and garage included — the two places every underestimate comes from.
  • Where a vehicle can legally stand at both ends, and how far the carry is from there.
  • The staircase: width, turns, and whether anything large came in before a wall went up.
  • What comes apart, and what will not survive coming apart a second time.
  • What would change the price, written down before you commit to anything.

The day itself

Protection down first at both ends. Furniture wrapped where it stands — blankets on upholstery, corner protection, crates for mirrors and glass. The load goes on in an order that suits unloading rather than the order things happen to be standing in.

At the far end, into the rooms you point at. Beds we took apart go back together first. The inventory is checked with you before the crew leaves.

What tends to cost people time

Parking that was not arranged, in the city and the market-town centres. A loft nobody emptied. Packing that is two-thirds finished when the crew arrives. And a completion that slips — which is ordinary, and why storage is worth arranging in advance rather than on the morning.

If the move is tied to school or work dates, see family moves. If it is leaving the county, long distance explains how those are planned.

Worth knowing

House moves, the practical questions

What does the survey look at?

The real volume, including the loft and the garage; access and parking at both ends; the stairs, their width and turns; what comes apart; and anything that needs special handling. The output is a written scope rather than a number on its own.

Will you dismantle furniture?

Beds, wardrobes, table legs and anything that will not pass a doorway assembled, rebuilt at the far end. Flat-pack that has already been moved once is the exception and we will say so before touching it.

Our terrace has a very narrow hallway.

Common across Leicester and the older parts of the market towns. It means more dismantling and occasionally a first-floor window route for a bed frame. Both are ordinary and both belong on the quote rather than in a conversation on the day.

What protection do you put down?

Floor runners and door-frame protection at both ends before anything moves, blanket wrap on upholstery and case furniture, corner protection, crates for mirrors and glass, and wardrobe cartons so clothes travel hanging.

How far in advance should we book?

As soon as a date looks real, and earlier for the end of the month or a Friday. August is the busiest month in this county because the student market moves then, so a summer family move wants booking well ahead.

Can you work Saturdays?

Regularly. Sundays are harder and some buildings restrict weekend moves in the lease, which is worth checking before you settle on a date.

Book the survey before the date.

Volume and access decide the crew, the vehicle and the hours. It costs nothing and it is the whole difference between a plan and a guess.
