Leicestershire → Portugal
Leicestershire to Portugal
The furthest destination we serve by road, and the one where every decision follows from a single fact: once the vehicle leaves, nobody is driving back for the rest of it.
Portugal has changed
It used to be almost entirely retirement to the Algarve. Now a good share of the households going that way are working — remote workers in Lisbon and Cascais, families who wanted the coast without giving up a career, and people who did the arithmetic on what a Midlands house buys on the Silver Coast.
The practical consequence is bigger loads. A retirement move often left the British furniture behind; a family relocating takes all of it.
The long way round
M1 and M25 to the crossing, then the whole western length of France — Rouen, Le Mans, Tours, Poitiers, Bordeaux. South to the Spanish border at Irún, then across Iberia through Burgos, Valladolid and Salamanca to Vilar Formoso. From there the A25 runs west for Aveiro and Porto, or the A23 and A1 turn south for Coimbra, Lisbon, the Alentejo and the Algarve.
It is a serious piece of driving with mandatory rest in the middle of it, planned and priced as such rather than pretended away.
NIF first, and genuinely first
The número de identificação fiscal underpins renting, buying, residency and customs. It is the single most common bottleneck on this route, and it is completely independent of the removal — so there is no reason to wait for anything else before starting it.
The certificate, built from the inventory
The certificado de bagagem is issued by the Portuguese consulate covering your UK address, before the goods travel, and it is built directly from the inventory we write during packing.
Which is why that inventory is itemised, valued in Portuguese and checked by you: if the certificate lists one thing and the vehicle contains another, clearance stops while somebody works out why.
One loading
- The inventory is complete before the vehicle arrives, not during
- The loft and the garage are decided beforehand rather than waved at
- Anything undecided goes into store rather than onto the lorry "just in case"
Storage while it comes together
Longest drive, longest paperwork lead time, and a UK completion date set by somebody else. Holding the household in store here until the NIF, the certificate and the property are all real is how most of these moves end up running.
Spain shares most of this drive if you are weighing the two destinations.
Worth knowing
Leicestershire to Portugal, the long route explained
What is the route?
M1 and M25 to the Kent crossing, the western length of France to Bordeaux, into Spain at Irún, then across Iberia through Burgos, Valladolid and Salamanca to the border at Vilar Formoso — and from there west for Porto or south for Lisbon and the Algarve.
What is the NIF and when?
The Portuguese tax number, obtained through a fiscal representative or a consulate. First, before the property and before the move, because nothing else in the process works without it.
What is the certificado de bagagem?
The baggage certificate, issued by the Portuguese consulate covering your UK address before the goods travel. It records the household goods as your used personal effects and is built directly from the inventory.
What happens if the certificate and the load differ?
Clearance stops while somebody reconciles them, which is the most common Portuguese delay. It is a paperwork failure rather than a transport one and it is preventable at this end.
Why does everything hinge on loading once?
Because the drive crosses France and almost all of Spain with statutory driver rest built in. A second trip is effectively a second move, so the inventory has to be complete and the household genuinely ready before the vehicle is loaded.
Is Algarve access difficult?
Mostly not — coastal villas and apartments generally have room to park and a usable approach. The exceptions are hillside properties above the older towns, where the drive up is steep, narrow and sometimes unmade.
And the cities?
Lisbon and Porto are steep, cobbled and tight, with staircases narrower than anything in a Leicester terrace. A hoist through a window is routine there and needs establishing before the load leaves.
Apply for the NIF today. Everything follows it.
The Portuguese file cannot begin without it, and the file — not the drive — is what sets the date.
